We have rounded up 7 common warning signs so that you know when your air conditioner will need to be serviced or replacement.
- Poor airflow coming from your system
This can be caused by clogged filters and ducts due to excessive dust or mould accumulation which obstructs the air flow. If your home is accumulating more dust than usual this is a warning sign that your air conditioner’s air filters have gotten clogged, and it is time to clean the air filters. Failure to do so can cause the filter to wear out and your air conditioning system will fail to operate effectively. It is also advised to replace the AC filters every 12 months or as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
A ducted air conditioning system which is not operating effectively may not distribute airflow evenly throughout the home. If the upstairs is cooler than the downstairs, or if one side of your home is colder than the other side, then there’s a good chance that your air conditioner isn’t working as efficiently as it should be. In many cases, it may be due to a failing compressor or ducting issues. This could mean that a new unit would help even those temperatures and make them more consistent throughout your house.
- Increase in your electricity bills
Utility bills are constantly increasing. If you have noticed a dramatic increase to you bill whilst operating your air conditioning system, it may be that the system is beginning to age and needing to work harder to get the home to a comfortable temperature. If you’ve noticed an increase in your electricity bill during winter and summer, it may be time to replace the system to a more energy efficient unit.
You’ve noticed strange noises coming from your AC unit and aren’t sure what they mean or how serious they are. If you have noticed that your AC has been making unusual noises lately like grinding, squealing, or scraping it may be a problem with internal parts and now is a good time to get it checked out by an air conditioning professional. An older unit can often develop problems that make it loud or unbalanced both of which will cause damage to your system over time.
- It is more than 10 years old
The age of your air conditioner could also be a reason to replace it. On average, the life span of air conditioners is 10 to 15 years, but they generally do not last more than a decade. If your system is older than 10 years old, it is more than likely that it is not as energy efficient as newer units on the market.
Poor air quality in your home like a musty unusual smell and strange odours may be contributed by a poor air conditioning unit that requires replacement or repair. If you are experiencing a burning smell, it means there is a burned-out part and if you are experiencing a musty smell, it may mean there’s mould growing inside your system. Having the system serviced will eliminate these issues and prevent sick home syndrome.
- There’s a leakage in the AC unit
If you see water coming from your outdoor unit, it is a sign that there may be a leak. Condensation is very normal to happen but when it becomes excessive and you notice large pools of water around the AC unit, it could mean that there is a blockage and a repair or replacement is necessary.
